Darby turns 13 today. And after his recent kidney removal surgery seems better than ever. Here are 13 reasons why I think he is the best dog in the world:
1. he doesn't smell -- or if he does I like the way he smells
2. the ways he charges with enthusiasm when I tell him to go from one room to the next, as if I've had the best idea he's ever heard in his life
3. he likes to sleep in
4. his doughy belly
5. he doesn't judge my doughy belly
6. the way he lops like a hare when he runs
7. his bravery at the vet
8. he takes time to smell the lavender on our walks each day
9. the way he makes a little jump into my arms when I bend down to pick him up
10. he's great with kids
11. he can sit when he feels like it
12. his smile (see picture below -- he really does smile)
13. he's given me my art, my company, my blogger friends, and the realization that life is magically surprising if you let it be
