TMZ is reporting that the Obamas' new dog will arrive on Tuesday, April 14, and it's not Cappy. It is a male, six-month old Portie named Charlie with the same lineage from the same kennel as Senator Kennedy's three dogs. Here's TMZ's story:
Now here's where the Kennedys come into play. The kennel has sold the Kennedys three Portuguese Water Dogs in the past, all from the same lineage. The dog the Obamas will be getting is from the same lineage as the Kennedy dogs. The Kennedy family will be presenting th new dog to the Obamas, but it's really coming from the kennel.
The reason this all sounds so technical is that there are issues regarding gifts to the Prez. The fact that the pup is being re-homed makes it all kosher.
So, it sounds like the First Dog is not Cappy Kennedy, but is from Cappy's kennel, Amigo Portuguese Water Dogs, and quite possibly from another litter by Penny, Cappy's mother.

Moira - just another lurker here, did you ask if the Obama dog is actually Cappy's littermate (C litter- Captains Courageous & Change You Can Believe In?) Actually Cappy would be older than 4 months, in fact he would be over 5 months now, right?

Wow, you're a good sleuth. I know there was a pup named 'Change You Can Believe In' that was sold. It would be neat if that was the pup.
Thanks for the kind words. I wrote a piece for our group blog www.dogsonthursday.blogspot.com back on January 15, titled The New First Dog that was a satire on life in the White House with a PWD.

I don't for a second believe that the dog in question just happened to be returned to the same breeder used by the Kennedy's who have also been pushing Obama to get this type of dog. I guess that none of the dogs in the DC area shelters were good enough for Kennedy and Obama. Same for the 11 homeless Portugese Water dogs on petfinder. Buy one dog, get one in a shelter killed. Shame on Kennedy and Obama!

I just looked up the pedigrees and these are good dogs. My beautiful 6 year old Sophie (Highwood's Sto-A-Way) is a kissing cousin of Amigo's Change You Can Believe In through her dam's line of Highwood / Benhil / Misty Meadow / Camerell / Astamar / Keel / Spindrift / Farmion / Umbrion / do Mar / al Gharb dogs. It was fun to look back through those pedigrees and remember some of the great dogs of the past -- like good old Keel Tonel and Natalie do Mar. There has been a lot of love and care taken in the preservation and development of this wonderful breed, and i am very happy that the Obamas will have the pleasure of sharing their home with such a beautiful and loving companion animal.

Why are they making such a big deal about the Obama dog?
it kinda doesn't make sense, it's just a dog!
